Mumbai alarms for increased leptospirosis cases

Mumbai, one of the important cities of India has been alarmed with the increase upto six fold in leptospirosis cases (a type of bacterial disease) during the first six months of 2016. The report was presented by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

In a comparison, 30 leptospirosis cases were confirmed in June this year, while there were only five cases in same period on 2015.

“Definitely, the numbers are more this year. However these cases are from scattered areas, so is not very alarming,” said Dr Padmaja Keskar, city’s executive health officer in a news report. Officials also confirmed that in an attempt to control the disease 100,000 rats were killed.
